Disease and Parasites in Pond Fish

Bacterial Disease

When in your pond you see several fish that have developed red marks or ulceration, bacterial fish disease is most likely to be the culprit. This is a result of poor water quality, problems with the filtration system or the introduction of new infected fish.

Coping successfully with bacterial disease and at times keeping your fish health can short term involve a lot of medical attention for the pond fish that have been affected. In the long term the chances are your fish will become re-infected, unless you solve the poor water issues. Below are listed the most common bacterial diseases with a brief explanation (insure you have diagnosed the fish disease accurately before going ahead with any pond treatment. Any doubts consult a professional).

Bacterial Gill Disease

Not easy to diagnose without taking a scrape and viewing under a microscope. This disease must be caught early as once the gill tissues has become swollen, survival is unlikely. Overcrowded ponds which are low in oxygen are the common cause of gill disease, high levels of ammonia or poor water quality are also a contributing factor.

Tuberculosis

This fish disease has symptoms which include weight loss, becoming lethargic, possible development of skin abnormalities.

If you suspect your fish have contracted this disease you must get it diagnosed and treated by a professional, however recover rate is very low.
